Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is commonly seen as one of the most difficult but popular poker games. It’s a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites play from all levels of players. This is the chief reason why a once obscure game, has expanded in acceptance so rapidly.

Omaha hi/low starts like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are given out to every player. A sequence of betting ensues where gamblers can bet, check, or fold. 3 cards are dealt out, this is called the flop. One more sequence of wagering happens. Once all the gamblers have in turn called or dropped out, another card is flipped on the turn. an additional round of betting ensues and then the river card is flipped. The gamblers must attempt to put together the strongest high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is where a few entrants often get flustered. Unlike Texas Holdem, in which the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha Hi-Lo the player must use exactly 3 cards from the board, and precisely 2 cards from their hand. No more, no less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot might be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is just how it sounds. It’s the best hand out of everyone’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the identical concept in just about every poker game.

A low hand is more complex, but certainly opens up the action. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that can be made, with the lowest value being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and below. The low hand takes half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there is no lower hand available, the higher hand takes the complete pot.

It may seem complicated initially, following a couple of rounds you will be agile enough to pick up on the fundamental subtleties of play with ease. Seeing as you have players wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are being used at once, Omaha 8 or better provides an exciting array of betting possibilities and seeing that you have numerous players battling for the high hand, along with several shooting for the low hand. If you prefer a game with a lot of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to compete in Omaha hi lo.
