Omaha Hi Low: General Summary

Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is frequently viewed as one of the most complex but well-loved poker games. It is a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites action from every level of players. This is the primary reason why a once obscure game, has grown in acceptance so quickly.

Omaha hi low begins exactly like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are dealt to each player. A sequence of wagering follows in which players can bet, check, or drop out. 3 cards are handed out, this is called the flop. A further sequence of wagering ensues. Once all the players have in turn called or dropped out, a further card is revealed on the turn. Another round of wagering follows and then the river card is flipped. The players will have to make the strongest high and low five card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is where many players get baffled. Unlike Texas Hold ‘Em, in which the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi lo the player must use precisely three cards from the board, and exactly 2 hole cards. Not a single card more, no less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot might be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It’s the best hand out of everyone’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the very same notion in just about every poker game.

A low hand is more complicated, but really free’s up the play. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that can be put together, with the lowest being A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and lower. The low hand takes half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there’s no low hand presented, the high hand takes the entire pot.

It may seem complicated at the start, after a few rounds you will be agile enough to get the basic nuances of the game simply enough. Since you have individuals betting for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as so many cards are in play, Omaha hi lo offers an overwhelming assortment of betting possibilities and seeing that you have numerous individuals shooting for the high hand, as well as several trying for the low. If you prefer a game with a considerable amount of outs and actions, it’s worth your time to participate in Omaha hi low.
