Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is commonly seen as one of the most complicated but favored poker games. It is a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for action from every level of players. This is the main reason why a once irrelevant variation, has increased in popularity so quickly.

Omaha 8 or better starts just like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are dealt to every player. A round of betting ensues in which gamblers can wager, check, or fold. Three cards are given out, this is called the flop. A further round of betting ensues. After all the gamblers have either called or folded, another card is flipped on the turn. a further sequence of betting ensues at which point the river card is flipped. The entrants must attempt to put together the strongest high and low five card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is where some players often get confused. Unlike Texas Holdem, in which the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player must use precisely three cards from the board, and exactly 2 hole cards. No more, not a single card less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot might be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It’s the strongest hand out of every player’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the same notion in almost all poker games.

The low hand is more difficult, but certainly opens up the action. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that might be made, with the worst being A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and below. The low hand takes half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there is no lower hand presented, the high hand wins the entire pot.

Although it seems complicated at the start, after a few rounds you will be agile enough to get the base subtleties of play with ease. Seeing as you have individuals wagering for the low and betting for the high, and seeing as so many cards are being used at the same time, Omaha 8 or better offers an exciting range of wagering options and seeing that you have several individuals shooting for the high, and a few shooting for the low hand. If you like a game with all kinds of outs and actions, it’s worth your time to play Omaha 8 or better.
