Omaha Hi Low: General Outline
Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is commonly seen as one of the most difficult but popular poker variations. It’s a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for play from every level of players. This is the chief reason why a once irrelevant variation, has expanded in acceptance so rapidly.
Omaha hi-low begins like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are given out to each player. A sequence of betting follows where gamblers can wager, check, or fold. 3 cards are dealt out, this is called the flop. Another sequence of wagering happens. After all the players have in turn called or folded, another card is flipped on the turn. a further round of betting ensues and then the river card is revealed. The gamblers will need to put together the best high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is the point where some entrants can get flustered. Contrasted to Holdem, where the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi lo the player has to use exactly 3 cards from the board, and exactly two cards from their hand. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot might be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is just what it sounds like. It is the strongest hand out of every player’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the same notion in almost every poker game.
The low hand is more complicated, but really opens up the play. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the worst hand that could be made, with the lowest being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and smaller. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there is no lower hand presented, the higher hand takes the whole pot.
It may seem complex initially, after a couple of hands you will be able to get the basic nuances of the game simply enough.
