Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is frequently seen as one of the most complicated but favored poker games. It is a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites action from every level of players. This is the primary reason why a once obscure game, has increased in acceptance so rapidly.

Omaha/8 begins like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are dealt to each player. A round of betting follows where players can bet, check, or fold. Three cards are handed out, this is known as the flop. Another sequence of betting happens. After all the players have either called or folded, a further card is flipped on the turn. Another round of betting follows and then the river card is revealed. The entrants will need to make the strongest high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is the point where a few players often get baffled. Unlike Holdem, where the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha Hi-Lo the player has to use exactly 3 cards on the board, and precisely two cards from their hand. No more, no less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot might be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It’s the strongest possible hand out of every player’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the same notion in almost all poker games.

A lower hand is more complex, but really opens up the action. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that could be made, with the worst being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and lower. The low hand takes half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there is no low hand available, the high hand wins the entire pot.

While it seems complicated at first, following a few rounds you will be able to get the fundamental subtleties of the game with ease.
