Omaha Hi Lo: Basic Outline
Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is often times viewed as one of the most complex but favored poker games. It’s a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites action from every level of players. This is the chief reason why a once irrelevant game, has grown in acceptance so rapidly.
Omaha Hi-Lo begins just like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are handed out to every player. A round of betting ensues where players can wager, check, or fold. Three cards are given out, this is called the flop. A further sequence of betting ensues. Once all the gamblers have in turn called or dropped out, another card is flipped on the turn. a further round of betting ensues at which point the river card is flipped. The gamblers must attempt to make the strongest high and low five card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is the point where a number of entrants get baffled. Unlike Texas Holdem, in which the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi lo the player has to use precisely 3 cards on the board, and exactly 2 cards from their hand. Not a single card more, no less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot may be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is just how it sounds. It is the best possible hand out of everyone’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house. It is the identical concept in just about all poker games.
A lower hand is more difficult, but certainly opens up the play. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that might be put together, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and lower. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there’s no low hand presented, the higher hand wins the whole pot.
It may seem complex at the start, following a couple of rounds you will be able to pick up on the basic nuances of the game with ease. Since you have people wagering for the low and betting for the high, and since so many cards are in play, Omaha High-Low provides an overwhelming array of betting options and because you have many players battling for the high hand, along with a few shooting for the low. If you enjoy a game with a considerable amount of outs and actions, it’s not a waste of your time to play Omaha 8 or better.
