Omaha Hi/Lo: General Overview
Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is often times viewed as one of the most complicated but well-loved poker games. It’s a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for play from all levels of players. This is the primary reason why a once invisible game, has grown in popularity so amazingly.
Omaha/8 begins exactly like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are given out to every player. A round of betting ensues where players can wager, check, or fold. 3 cards are handed out, this is called the flop. One more sequence of wagering ensues. After all the players have in turn called or dropped out, another card is revealed on the turn. a further round of wagering happens at which point the river card is flipped. The gamblers must attempt to put together the best high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is where many entrants get flustered. Unlike Texas Holdem, in which the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi/low the player must use precisely three cards on the board, and exactly two hole cards. No more, no less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot may be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is just how it sounds. It’s the strongest possible hand out of everyone’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the same approach in just about all poker games.
The low hand is more difficult, but really free’s up the play. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the weakest hand that can be made, with the lowest value being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and lower. The low hand takes half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there’s no lower hand presented, the high hand takes the entire pot.
It may seem complicated at first, following a couple of rounds you will be able to pick up on the base subtleties of the game easily enough. Since you have people wagering for the low and betting for the high, and since so many cards are being used at once, Omaha hi-low provides an overwhelming range of wagering choices and owing to the fact that you have numerous individuals trying for the high, along with several battling for the low hand. If you love a game with a considerable amount of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to play Omaha hi/lo.
