Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is frequently seen as one of the most complicated but favored poker games. It’s a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites action from every level of players. This is the chief reason why a once invisible game, has expanded in acceptance so rapidly.

Omaha/8 starts like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are dealt to each player. A sequence of betting follows in which players can wager, check, or fold. Three cards are handed out, this is known as the flop. A further round of wagering ensues. Once all the players have either called or folded, another card is flipped on the turn. an additional sequence of wagering ensues and then the river card is revealed. The gamblers will need to make the strongest high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is the point where some entrants often get baffled. Unlike Texas Hold ‘Em, in which the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player has to utilize precisely 3 cards from the board, and exactly two cards from their hand. Not a single card more, no less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot could be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is just what it sounds like. It is the strongest hand out of every player’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the very same notion in just about every poker game.

A lower hand is more difficult, but certainly free’s up the play. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the weakest hand that can be made, with the lowest being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and smaller. The low hand takes half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there is no low hand available, the higher hand takes the whole pot.

It may seem complicated at the start, after a few hands you will be agile enough to pick up on the fundamental nuances of the game easily enough. Seeing as you have people wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and since such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha 8 or better offers an exciting assortment of wagering options and seeing that you have several players trying for the high hand, and several shooting for the low. If you love a game with a lot of outs and actions, it’s not a waste of your time to compete in Omaha 8 or better.
