Omaha Hi/Lo: Fundamental Outline
Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is commonly seen as one of the most complicated but favored poker games. It is a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for action from all levels of players. This is the primary reason why a once invisible game, has grown in acceptance so rapidly.
Omaha hi lo begins just like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are handed out to every player. A sequence of wagering ensues in which players can bet, check, or fold. Three cards are handed out, this is known as the flop. Another round of betting happens. Once all the players have either called or dropped out, another card is flipped on the turn. an additional sequence of wagering ensues at which point the river card is flipped. The entrants will have to put together the best high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is where many entrants can get confused. Unlike Hold’em, where the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player has to utilize precisely 3 cards on the board, and exactly 2 hole cards. No more, not a single card less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot may be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is just what it sounds like. It’s the strongest hand out of every player’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the very same concept in almost every poker game.
A low hand is more complicated, but certainly free’s up the action. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that can be put together, with the lowest value being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and smaller. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there is no lower hand presented, the high hand wins the entire pot.
While it seems complicated at the start, following a few hands you will be agile enough to get the basic subtleties of the game with ease. Since you have people betting for the low and wagering for the high, and since so many cards are in play, Omaha/8 offers an amazing array of betting options and seeing that you have many players battling for the high, and a few trying for the low hand. If you love a game with a lot of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to participate in Omaha hi lo.
