Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is commonly seen as one of the most difficult but favored poker games. It’s a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites play from all levels of players. This is the primary reason why a once invisible variation, has grown in acceptance so rapidly.

Omaha/8 starts exactly like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are given out to each player. A sequence of wagering follows in which gamblers can bet, check, or fold. 3 cards are dealt out, this is called the flop. Another sequence of betting ensues. After all the gamblers have either called or dropped out, a further card is revealed on the turn. Another sequence of betting ensues at which point the river card is revealed. The gamblers must attempt to put together the strongest high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is where many entrants often get flustered. Contrasted to Hold’em, in which the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player must use exactly 3 cards on the board, and precisely 2 cards from their hand. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot might be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It is the strongest possible hand out of everyone’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the identical notion in almost every poker game.

A lower hand is more complex, but really free’s up the play. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that can be put together, with the lowest value being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and lower. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there is no low hand available, the higher hand wins the entire pot.

While it seems difficult initially, after a few hands you will be able to get the fundamental nuances of the game with ease. Seeing as you have players betting for the low and betting for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are being used at the same time, Omaha hi lo offers an amazing assortment of betting possibilities and owing to the fact that you have numerous players shooting for the high hand, along with many shooting for the low.
