Omaha Hi Low: Basic Overview
Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is often times seen as one of the most complex but favored poker games. It is a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites action from every level of players. This is the primary reason why a once obscure game, has increased in acceptance so rapidly.
Omaha Hi-Lo begins just like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are handed out to each player. A sequence of betting ensues in which players can wager, check, or fold. Three cards are given out, this is called the flop. One more sequence of betting happens. Once all the gamblers have either called or dropped out, another card is revealed on the turn. an additional round of betting happens at which point the river card is revealed. The players must attempt to put together the strongest high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is where a number of entrants often get flustered. Unlike Texas Holdem, in which the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi lo the player must use precisely 3 cards on the board, and exactly two cards from their hand. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot can be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."
A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It is the best hand out of everyone’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house. It is the same notion in nearly every poker game.
A lower hand is more complicated, but really free’s up the action. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that might be made, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and lower. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there is no low hand presented, the higher hand takes the complete pot.
Although it seems complex at the outset, following a couple of hands you will be agile enough to get the base nuances of the game easily enough. Seeing as you have individuals betting for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha 8 or better provides an overwhelming collection of betting options and owing to the fact that you have numerous individuals battling for the high, and many shooting for the low. If you like a game with a considerable amount of outs and actions, it’s not a waste of your time to play Omaha/8.
