Omaha Hi-Lo: Basic Overview
Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is frequently viewed as one of the most complex but popular poker variations. It’s a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites play from all levels of players. This is the chief reason why a once obscure variation, has increased in acceptance so rapidly.
Omaha/8 begins like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are handed out to every player. A sequence of wagering ensues in which players can bet, check, or fold. Three cards are dealt out, this is known as the flop. Another round of betting ensues. Once all the gamblers have in turn called or dropped out, an additional card is revealed on the turn. an additional round of wagering follows at which point the river card is revealed. The players will need to make the best high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is where a number of entrants get baffled. Unlike Holdem, where the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi-low the player must use exactly three cards on the board, and precisely 2 cards from their hand. No more, no less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot may be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."
A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It’s the strongest hand out of every player’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house. It is the identical concept in just about every poker game.
The low hand is more complex, but certainly free’s up the play. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the worst hand that might be made, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and smaller. The low hand takes half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there’s no lower hand presented, the high hand wins the whole pot.
It may seem complicated at the outset, following a few rounds you will be able to pick up on the fundamental nuances of play with ease. Seeing as you have individuals wagering for the low and betting for the high, and since such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha/8 offers an exciting collection of wagering choices and seeing that you have many individuals battling for the high, along with many trying for the low. If you prefer a game with a plethora of outs and actions, it’s not a waste of your time to compete in Omaha hi lo.
