Omaha Hi Low: Fundamental Outline
Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is frequently seen as one of the most complex but favored poker variations. It is a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites action from all levels of players. This is the chief reason why a once irrelevant game, has grown in acceptance so quickly.
Omaha/8 begins just like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are handed out to every player. A round of wagering ensues in which players can bet, check, or fold. 3 cards are given out, this is called the flop. Another sequence of wagering happens. After all the players have in turn called or folded, an additional card is revealed on the turn. an additional round of betting happens at which point the river card is flipped. The gamblers will have to make the best high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is the point where many entrants get flustered. Contrasted to Texas Holdem, where the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi-low the player has to utilize exactly three cards on the board, and exactly 2 hole cards. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot can be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is just what it sounds like. It’s the strongest possible hand out of every player’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the identical notion in almost every poker game.
A low hand is more difficult, but really opens up the action. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that could be made, with the lowest value being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and smaller. The low hand wins half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there’s no low hand presented, the high hand takes the entire pot.
While it seems complicated initially, after a couple of rounds you will be able to pick up on the fundamental nuances of play easily enough. Since you have individuals betting for the low and wagering for the high, and since so many cards are being used at the same time, Omaha 8 or better provides an exciting range of betting possibilities and because you have numerous individuals battling for the high hand, as well as several battling for the low. If you enjoy a game with a plethora of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to compete in Omaha/8.
