Omaha Hi Lo: Fundamental Overview
Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is frequently viewed as one of the most complicated but well-loved poker variations. It is a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for play from all levels of players. This is the main reason why a once irrelevant game, has expanded in acceptance so quickly.
Omaha/8 begins exactly like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are given out to every player. A round of wagering follows where gamblers can bet, check, or fold. Three cards are dealt out, this is called the flop. One more round of wagering happens. After all the gamblers have in turn called or folded, a further card is revealed on the turn. Another sequence of wagering ensues at which point the river card is flipped. The gamblers will need to put together the strongest high and low five card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is the point where a few entrants often get flustered. Unlike Holdem, where the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player must utilize precisely 3 cards on the board, and exactly 2 cards from their hand. No more, no less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot may be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."
A high hand is just what it sounds like. It is the strongest possible hand out of every player’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the very same notion in just about all poker games.
The lower hand is more difficult, but really free’s up the action. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that can be put together, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and lower. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there is no low hand available, the high hand takes the complete pot.
While it seems complex at the outset, after a few hands you will be agile enough to get the basic nuances of play with ease. Since you have people betting for the low and wagering for the high, and since such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha/8 provides an amazing assortment of betting choices and seeing that you have numerous individuals battling for the high hand, and a few battling for the low. If you like a game with a plethora of outs and actions, it’s worth your time to play Omaha 8 or better.
