Omaha Hi-Lo: General Summary
Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is frequently viewed as one of the most difficult but popular poker variations. It is a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for action from every level of players. This is the chief reason why a once obscure variation, has increased in acceptance so quickly.
Omaha hi/lo starts like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are handed out to each player. A sequence of betting ensues in which players can bet, check, or drop out. Three cards are handed out, this is referred to as the flop. A further sequence of wagering happens. After all the players have in turn called or folded, a further card is flipped on the turn. a further sequence of wagering follows at which point the river card is flipped. The gamblers will need to make the strongest high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is the point where many players often get flustered. Unlike Holdem, where the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha hi/low the player must use precisely three cards from the board, and exactly 2 cards from their hand. Not a single card more, no less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot could be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."
A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It is the best possible hand out of everyone’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the same notion in almost all poker games.
A lower hand is more complicated, but certainly free’s up the play. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that might be put together, with the worst being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and below. The low hand wins half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there is no lower hand available, the high hand takes the entire pot.
It may seem difficult at the outset, following a couple of hands you will be able to get the basic subtleties of play simply enough. Seeing as you have individuals betting for the low and betting for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha hi-low offers an overwhelming collection of betting possibilities and because you have numerous players shooting for the high, and a few trying for the low. If you like a game with a lot of outs and actions, it’s worth your time to compete in Omaha 8 or better.
