Omaha Hi Low: Fundamental Summary
Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is often times seen as one of the most difficult but popular poker games. It is a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for action from every level of players. This is the primary reason why a once invisible variation, has expanded in popularity so rapidly.
Omaha hi low begins exactly like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are given out to each player. A round of wagering follows in which players can bet, check, or drop out. 3 cards are dealt out, this is called the flop. A further sequence of betting ensues. Once all the gamblers have either called or folded, an additional card is revealed on the turn. Another round of wagering ensues and then the river card is revealed. The entrants will need to make the best high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is the point where a few entrants often get baffled. Contrasted to Texas Hold ‘Em, in which the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi lo the player must utilize exactly three cards on the board, and exactly two hole cards. No more, not a single card less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot might be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."
A high hand is just how it sounds. It’s the strongest hand out of every player’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house. It is the same notion in just about all poker games.
A low hand is more complicated, but certainly opens up the action. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that could be made, with the lowest being A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and smaller. The low hand takes half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there’s no lower hand presented, the high hand wins the entire pot.
Although it seems complex at the start, after a couple of hands you will be able to pick up on the fundamental nuances of the game with ease. Since you have individuals wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are being used at once, Omaha 8 or better provides an overwhelming collection of betting choices and because you have several individuals trying for the high hand, along with many battling for the low hand. If you love a game with a lot of outs and actions, it is worth your time to play Omaha/8.
