Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is frequently viewed as one of the most complicated but favored poker variations. It’s a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites action from all levels of players. This is the chief reason why a once obscure variation, has increased in popularity so quickly.

Omaha/8 starts like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are handed out to each player. A sequence of wagering follows where gamblers can wager, check, or drop out. 3 cards are given out, this is referred to as the flop. One more round of wagering ensues. After all the players have either called or folded, another card is revealed on the turn. an additional sequence of wagering ensues and then the river card is revealed. The gamblers will need to make the best high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is where some entrants often get baffled. Unlike Texas Hold ‘Em, in which the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi/lo the player must use precisely 3 cards on the board, and exactly two hole cards. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot can be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It’s the strongest possible hand out of every player’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house. It is the same approach in just about every poker game.

The low hand is more difficult, but certainly free’s up the action. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the worst hand that could be put together, with the lowest being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and below. The low hand wins half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there is no lower hand available, the higher hand wins the complete pot.

Although it seems difficult at the start, following a few hands you will be agile enough to pick up on the basic nuances of the game with ease. Since you have individuals betting for the low and betting for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha hi lo offers an amazing assortment of wagering possibilities and seeing that you have numerous individuals battling for the high hand, as well as a few shooting for the low. If you like a game with a considerable amount of outs and actions, it’s not a waste of your time to compete in Omaha 8 or better.
