Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is often times viewed as one of the most complicated but well-loved poker variations. It is a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for action from all levels of players. This is the chief reason why a once obscure game, has increased in acceptance so rapidly.

Omaha 8 or better begins just like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are handed out to every player. A round of wagering follows in which gamblers can bet, check, or fold. 3 cards are given out, this is referred to as the flop. Another sequence of wagering happens. After all the players have in turn called or folded, another card is flipped on the turn. a further sequence of wagering ensues at which point the river card is flipped. The gamblers will have to put together the best high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is the point where some entrants often get confused. Unlike Texas Hold ‘Em, where the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi/lo the player has to utilize exactly three cards on the board, and precisely 2 cards from their hand. No more, no less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot can be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It’s the strongest possible hand out of everyone’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the identical notion in nearly all poker games.

A lower hand is more complicated, but really free’s up the play. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the worst hand that might be made, with the worst being A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and smaller. The low hand wins half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there’s no low hand presented, the higher hand takes the whole pot.

While it seems complex at first, following a couple of rounds you will be agile enough to get the fundamental nuances of the game simply enough.
