Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is commonly viewed as one of the most complex but favored poker variations. It is a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites action from every level of players. This is the main reason why a once obscure game, has expanded in acceptance so rapidly.

Omaha hi low starts exactly like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are given out to every player. A round of betting follows in which players can wager, check, or drop out. 3 cards are handed out, this is referred to as the flop. A further sequence of betting happens. After all the players have in turn called or dropped out, a further card is flipped on the turn. an additional round of wagering happens at which point the river card is flipped. The players will have to make the strongest high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is where some players get flustered. Contrasted to Texas Hold ‘Em, where the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi-low the player has to use precisely three cards from the board, and exactly two hole cards. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot can be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It’s the best hand out of everyone’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the same approach in almost every poker game.

The lower hand is more difficult, but really opens up the play. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that could be made, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and smaller. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there’s no lower hand available, the high hand wins the entire pot.

Although it seems complicated at the start, after a couple of hands you will be able to pick up on the basic nuances of the game with ease. Seeing as you have individuals betting for the low and wagering for the high, and since such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha 8 or better offers an exciting array of wagering options and because you have several individuals shooting for the high hand, as well as several battling for the low hand. If you love a game with a lot of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to compete in Omaha/8.
