Omaha Hi-Low: General Outline
Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is commonly seen as one of the most complicated but favored poker variations. It is a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for action from all levels of players. This is the main reason why a once obscure game, has expanded in acceptance so quickly.
Omaha 8 or better starts like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are given out to every player. A sequence of betting ensues where players can bet, check, or fold. 3 cards are dealt out, this is called the flop. One more round of wagering ensues. Once all the players have in turn called or folded, an additional card is flipped on the turn. Another round of wagering happens and then the river card is flipped. The entrants will need to put together the strongest high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is where a few entrants get baffled. Contrasted to Holdem, where the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player has to use precisely three cards from the board, and precisely 2 cards from their hand. No more, not a single card less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot can be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."
A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It is the best hand out of every player’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the very same concept in just about every poker game.
A low hand is more complex, but certainly free’s up the play. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the weakest hand that could be made, with the lowest value being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and smaller. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there’s no lower hand available, the higher hand takes the whole pot.
Although it seems complex at the start, after a few hands you will be able to get the fundamental subtleties of the game with ease. Since you have individuals wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and since so many cards are in play, Omaha/8 provides an overwhelming collection of betting options and seeing that you have many individuals trying for the high, as well as many trying for the low.
