Omaha Hi Low: Fundamental Outline
Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is commonly seen as one of the most complex but popular poker games. It is a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for play from all levels of players. This is the primary reason why a once obscure variation, has increased in popularity so amazingly.
Omaha hi/low begins exactly like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are dealt to every player. A sequence of betting follows where players can wager, check, or fold. Three cards are handed out, this is referred to as the flop. A further sequence of wagering ensues. Once all the players have in turn called or dropped out, an additional card is revealed on the turn. Another sequence of betting happens and then the river card is revealed. The gamblers must attempt to put together the best high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is the point where a few players often get confused. Contrasted to Holdem, where the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player has to utilize exactly 3 cards from the board, and exactly two cards from their hand. No more, not a single card less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot could be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It is the strongest possible hand out of every player’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the very same approach in just about every poker game.
A low hand is more complex, but really opens up the action. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the worst hand that could be made, with the lowest being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and lower. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there’s no lower hand presented, the high hand takes the entire pot.
Although it seems difficult at first, after a few hands you will be able to pick up on the base subtleties of the game easily enough. Seeing as you have people betting for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha 8 or better offers an overwhelming array of wagering possibilities and seeing that you have many individuals trying for the high hand, along with many battling for the low hand.
