Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is frequently seen as one of the most difficult but popular poker variations. It is a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites action from every level of players. This is the primary reason why a once obscure game, has grown in acceptance so rapidly.

Omaha 8 or better begins exactly like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are dealt to each player. A round of betting ensues in which gamblers can wager, check, or drop out. Three cards are given out, this is known as the flop. Another sequence of wagering ensues. After all the gamblers have either called or dropped out, another card is revealed on the turn. Another round of betting ensues and then the river card is flipped. The entrants must attempt to put together the strongest high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is where a number of entrants can get baffled. Unlike Holdem, in which the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha Hi-Lo the player must utilize precisely three cards on the board, and precisely 2 hole cards. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot can be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is just how it sounds. It is the strongest hand out of every player’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the identical approach in just about all poker games.

The lower hand is more complicated, but certainly opens up the play. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the weakest hand that could be made, with the lowest value being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and smaller. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there’s no low hand available, the higher hand wins the entire pot.

It may seem complex at first, after a couple of hands you will be agile enough to pick up on the basic subtleties of play simply enough. Since you have players wagering for the low and betting for the high, and since such a large number of cards are being used at the same time, Omaha hi/lo offers an overwhelming range of betting possibilities and owing to the fact that you have numerous players trying for the high hand, as well as several battling for the low hand.
