Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is commonly viewed as one of the most complex but favored poker variations. It is a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites play from all levels of players. This is the main reason why a once invisible variation, has grown in popularity so amazingly.

Omaha 8 or better begins exactly like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are dealt to every player. A round of betting ensues in which players can bet, check, or fold. 3 cards are handed out, this is called the flop. One more sequence of betting ensues. Once all the players have in turn called or dropped out, a further card is flipped on the turn. an additional round of wagering ensues and then the river card is flipped. The gamblers will have to make the strongest high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is the point where many players get baffled. Unlike Holdem, in which the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi lo the player has to utilize exactly three cards from the board, and exactly two cards from their hand. Not a single card more, no less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot might be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is just how it sounds. It’s the strongest possible hand out of every player’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the identical concept in just about all poker games.

The lower hand is more complex, but really opens up the action. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the worst hand that could be put together, with the lowest being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and below. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there’s no low hand available, the high hand takes the entire pot.

It may seem complicated initially, following a couple of rounds you will be agile enough to pick up on the basic subtleties of play simply enough. Since you have individuals wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha/8 offers an overwhelming collection of wagering options and seeing that you have numerous individuals battling for the high, and several battling for the low. If you love a game with a lot of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to participate in Omaha 8 or better.
